Joycelyn Wilson wrote in The Root (2013) that traditional feminism failed African-American women.
She goes on to say that we should address issues of feminism on our own terms and in our own way. Controversy swirled around her comments and black women took sides.

This week Gloria Steinem was interviewed at the Black Enterprise's Women of Power Summit, and expressed her opinion about the importance of black women in the feminist movement.
"I know we all have different experiences, but I learned feminism disproportionately from black women."
